What is the rheology and why it is key for your project?

What is the rheology and why is it important in mining?

Rheology is the branch of physics that studies how to flow and deform materials. In mining, it is particularly relevant because a large part of the metallurgical processes work with pulps minerals, which are suspensions of solid particles in water.

Understanding the rheological behavior of these suspensions is used to understand how to move within the processes, which directly affects the stability and efficiency of mining operations.

The pulp, minerals are mixtures of solid particles of mineral suspended in water, which allow to transport, process and separate the minerals within a concentrator plant.

These pulps are present at multiple stages of processing, such as grinding, classification, flotation, thickening, filtration, and hydraulic transport.

The rheological properties of the pulps determined how to flowing material within the plant, which directly affects processes such as:

  • transport and pumping of slurries
  • grinding and classification
  • flotation of minerals
  • thickening and tailings management

When the rheological behavior changes, it can also change the efficiency, stability and resource consumption in these processes.

Among the most important properties of the rheology in pulps minerals are to be found:

  • Apparent viscosity: determines the resistance to the flow of the pulp.
  • Yield stress (effort cedencia): indicates the minimum force necessary for the pulp begins to flow.

These variables influence the energy required to move the pulps and in the efficiency of multiple metallurgical processes.

The rheological behavior may vary due to different factors present in the process, among them:

  • percentage of solids in the pulp
  • the presence of clay minerals
  • particle size
  • use of chemical reagents

These factors can modify the viscosity and the effort necessary to ensure that the pulp to flow, generating changes in the performance of the operations.

Historically, measuring the rheological has been made by spot samples analyzed in the laboratory, which has several limitations:

  • the results do not always represent the actual conditions of operation
  • there is high variability in the pulp, minerals
  • the results are not obtained in real-time

This has made it difficult to integrate the rheology directly in making operational decisions.

The rheology online refers to the continuous measurement of the rheological properties directly in the industrial process.

This allows you to obtain real-time information about the behavior of the pulp, minerals, facilitating a better understanding of the operational conditions and a more efficient management of the process.
